Filing taxes online has become increasingly popular over the years, thanks to the convenience and efficiency it offers to taxpayers. However, it's important to take certain precautions to ensure that your personal and financial information stays safe during this tax season. Keep reading for some tips to keep in mind when filing your taxes online in 2023!

1. Use a secure internet connection.

When filing your taxes online, make sure you're using a secure internet connection. Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks or unsecured networks, as they may not be safe for transmitting sensitive data. It's best to use your home internet connection to help prevent identity theft and other tax safety concerns such as scams, phishing, fraud, and more.

2. Choose a reputable tax filing service.

Choose a reputable tax filing service that has a good track record for security. Look for services that use encryption to protect your personal and financial information. Many people elect to use TurboTax, but there are many others out there that exist that are perfectly safe and secure to use! Do a quick Google search to see some of the best options for you.

3. Create a strong password.

Create a strong password for your tax filing account. Avoid using easily guessable passwords, and instead, use a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Most "good" passwords should be 8-16 characters. If you can't think of one, Google now offers a "suggested password" service that you can elect to use when creating new accounts or changing outdated passwords.

4. Enable two-factor authentication.

Enable two-factor authentication on your tax filing account. This will provide an extra layer of security by requiring a code in addition to your password to access your account. Two-factor authentication is typically connected to your phone number or email address and will notify you if someone is trying to log in to your account, as well as provide an OTP (one-time password) so that you may access your account.

5. Be wary of phishing scams.

Be on the lookout for phishing scams, which are emails or text messages that attempt to trick you into giving away your personal or financial information. Don't click on links or download attachments from suspicious emails or texts. Phishing scams can often look legitimate, or as though they are from your bank or other financial institution, social media, or credit card company. Most often, they claim that in order to save sensitive information and regain access to your account you have to perform a number of steps, and claim they need you to "prove your identity," or "confirm personal information," in order to regain access to the account, withdraw money, etc.

6. Keep your software up to date.

Keep your computer's operating system, web browser, and tax filing software up to date. Updates often contain security patches that can help protect you from cyber threats.

7. Don't save sensitive information.

Don't save sensitive information, such as your social security number or bank account information, on your computer or in your tax filing account. Instead, enter it manually each time you file your taxes. It may be inconvenient to look for a password after a while, but this helps ensure your personal information remains safe.

By following a few of these tips, you can help ensure that your personal and financial information stays safe when filing your taxes online this year. Remember to stay vigilant and use common sense when it comes to protecting your information online, and you'll be well on your way to filing your taxes online safely this tax season!
