The holiday season is upon us which means a sharp uptick in online shopping and finding gifts for family and loved ones. Unfortunately, this also means that there is an uptick in packages being stolen from your porch by pilfering pirates and thieves! Use some of our practical tips below to keep your packages safe this holiday season!

Install a video doorbell camera.

This is a popular option not only for your home’s general protection from thieves but also great for protecting what gets delivered to your home. Video doorbell cameras start recording as soon as the doorbell is pushed and you can see who is at the door. Sometimes they are motion-sensitive, so if someone comes up on your porch with ill intent, you can catch them in action. Even if you don’t deter them in time, this footage helps authorities see who did it and improves the chances of catching them.. Invest in a porch lockbox.

This is a great option to keep packages safe and they are becoming more common on the market. Some have slots big enough for a package to be dropped into but require a key to open, and others feature a place to input a code you give to your delivery driver in the delivery instructions on the merchant’s website in order to drop something off. They can be on the pricey side but are well worth the investment if you find your packages getting taken frequently.

Require a signature on delivery.

This is not always convenient if you work long hours or have a trip planned, but is good when you can reliably be home to receive a package. By requiring a signature for delivery, the drivers can’t put your packages just anywhere and they will have to come back in order to re-attempt delivery if no one is there to sign, but the package stays safe.

Consider a mailbox sensor.

A mailbox sensor is a small device that attaches to your mailbox or another place where you receive mail and packages. It notifies you if a mailbox or delivery box is opened so you know when your mail is delivered or if someone is trying to get into your mailbox to steal something.

Make it obvious and clear you have a home security system.

This will often deter most intruders and thieves from targeting your home to begin with, as these types of people are opportunistic. Setting ups signs that say the area is under surveillance or placing security cameras in open, obvious spots can help deter people from stealing your stuff or breaking into your home.
