COVID-19 may be keeping us out of the gym, but many of us are using it as a chance to get outside and enjoy the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. While working out outside has its advantages, there are things you should do to be sure you’re staying safe. Here are some tips for enjoying exercise in the great outdoors safely.
1. Daylight is your friend. Avoid exercising in twilight or the dark if possible, especially if you’re alone.
2. Exercising with a buddy is a great idea for many reasons, but one of the most important is that it often deters predators.
3. Be sure you'll have continuous cell phone service where you’re going so you can call or text someone at any time. And don’t forget your ID – if there’s an emergency, it will help rescue personnel get in touch with your family more quickly.
4. Plan your route in advance and let at least one other person know where you’re going. Use a map, and leave a marked copy with a friend or family member, especially if you’ll be on one of our mountain trails in a rural area.
5. If you do exercise at dusk or in the evening, wear reflective clothing so cars can easily see you. Stick to public areas with other people around.
6. Check the weather before you head out. Getting caught in one of our famous pop-up thunderstorms is not only inconvenient, but you don’t want to risk flash flooding or slick pavements while you’re walking, running, or cycling.
7. Don't pump up the volume. If you’re using earbuds, wear just one and keep the volume low enough so you can always hear what’s going on around you.
8. Know what to do if you encounter an animal. Dogs and bears are probably the two main animal threats in the outdoors of WNC. If you encounter an aggressive dog, don’t run, yell, or look him in the eye; he’ll see this as a threat. Don't use mace; it won’t work well and will only upset the dog more. Stand with your hands and fists close to the body.
WNC is home to a large population of black bears. Bear attacks are infrequent, but if you do encounter one, you should do the following: Make loud noises and make yourself as big as possible. If you’re with others, stand together in a group. Remain calm, don’t make eye contact and don’t run or climb a tree — a bear can run much faster than you and they’re adept at climbing trees. Take bear spray with you — it can stun a bear and give you time to escape. Try again to remain calm and back away slowly. If a bear does attack you, the best thing you can do is fight back.
Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy the great outdoors of WNC!
