Summer is the time to get outside and go on vacation! It’s a fun season that gives families the opportunity to spend time together and make pleasant summer memories. Whether you’ve been planning a trip for a while, or this is your first time out since the beginning of the pandemic, we’ve got some good safety tips for your summer trip!
1. Secure your home before you head out. Burglaries increase during the warmer months. This is due in part that more people are out, but also because windows and doors may be left open, making their homes a prime opportunity for burglars. Before leaving on a trip, ensure that all windows, doors, fences and sheds or garages are locked to help keep your home safe. Consider adding a security system to further improve your home’s safety and tell your neighbors when you plan on heading out and ask them if they would keep any eye on the place while you’re gone.
2. If traveling with children, ensure you have a car seat, booster seat, strollers, snacks, extra clothing and other essential items to keep them safe and comfortable while on vacation.
3. Don’t forget medications if you take any, and ensure you bring enough for your trip or even a few days after. If you have allergies or health conditions, make sure that if there is an emergency that this information is easily accessible. Blood type, a list of medications you’re on (if applicable), as well as a list of allergies you may have can make sure that if an emergency does occur, that you and your family are prepared.
4. Be aware of sun and heat safety, especially if you’re going somewhere where the temps may be soaring. Ensure you have plenty of sunscreen, stay hydrated and take breaks from the sun regularly to prevent overheating, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke.
5. Be mindful of water safety, especially if you have children. Supervise children closely in and around water, and be sure they have the right PFD’s they need in case of a water emergency. PFDs are not a replacement for proper adult supervision, only a supplement just in case.
